Cádiz, the port city at the far end of the Andalusian west coast, is truly a discovery, still relatively untouched by tourists. This is a place you go to, and not just “drop in”. The town is beautiful and well kept, it has an impressive boardwalk, an eye-catching and grand cathedral, and a pleasant city center. Facing the old fort that has been restored, there is a pier and a fine-grained sandy beach. Cádiz is considered by most historians to be the oldest city that still exists in Western Europe, founded by Phoenicians as early as 1100 years before Christ.
In the historic district of Casco Antiguo within the remnants of the city wall, there is a myriad of narrow streets and alleys, a number of squares and squares, and typical white-painted Andalusian brick houses with flat roofs. Here you will find lots of charm and atmosphere, and a number of good restaurants and markets. A glass of local sherry and some tapas at one of the many small eateries are included!
Columbus also set sail for the new world from Cadiz, twice in fact, and one of his famous ships, Santa Maria, is said to have been built in the area.
